How many losses kills a good ranking?

It totally depends on who you are. Ohio State lost to two ranked teams and one unranked team.  Those three losses have bumped them to #6 in the land.  One of the teams that beat them, has also lost three games, two to ranked teams, one to a rather awful Davidson team.  For that, Kansas is #7.  Right after that,… (more…)

2011 Big East meltdown

Through various defections from other conferences, the NCAA basketball Big East Conference has turned into a monster Pittsburgh Notre Dame Syracuse Louisville St. John’s Cincinnati West Virginia Georgetown Connecticut Villanova Marquette Seton Hall Rutgers Providence South Florida DePaul I am assuming the NCAA was so impressed with the size of the the Big East’s membership that it decided to send… (more…)

NCAA hearts a couple of teams

The brackets are out for the 2011 NCAA Tournament.  Struck me as odd a couple of teams locations since the NCAA supposedly does not like giving teams a home court advantage.  Well, they did to a large degree.  How far would you drive on a whim to watch your team play in the tournament?  A couple of hours is no… (more…)

2011 BCS

Tonight is the night every fan of NCAA football waits for.  By having really good seasons, two teams are chosen to play for the championship.  This year those two teams are: and That’s right, Oregon and Auburn.  The Ducks vs the Tigers.  Both teams are undefeated.  Texas Christian is too, but we’ll just have to ignore them in order to… (more…)

0-13 and #1 forever

A long time ago I blogged on an anomoly.  This college kid built himself a mansion.  THEN he left college.  That’s a no-no.  Four years later, the NCAA figured it out too.  They got so mad they stripped USC ( Southern Cal, not South Carolina ) of all their wins in the 2004 season.  The left Southern Cal 0-13 for… (more…)

When refs go bad

The Kentucky Cornell game started with a Cornell player giving a Kentucky player a two-handed shove almost out of the arena, and climaxed with a two-handed take down of Demarcus Cousins by a Cornell player.  The first wasn’t called at all, the second was merely a foul.  You know when the officiating sucks about as bad as it can when… (more…)

Cornell’s blueprint for beating Kentucky?

Stephen Danley, because he played basketball in college, is a sports writer for the paper most likely to get something wrong every single time.  His take on tonight’s Kentucky-Cornell game: It was Cornell’s near win against Kansas early in the season that made me, like a lot of other people, pencil the Big Red in for a victory in the… (more…)

The Non-Call

1992 – Duke was ranked #1 pre-season, and despite two close losses, remained #1 the entire season.  Kentucky was coming off a two year suspension with a brash young coach named Rick Pitino and manned by a bunch of kids who had remained loyal to UK and stayed through the suspension: Richie Farmer John Pelphrey Darren Feldhouse Sean Woods The… (more…)

The annual bash the NCAA selection committee post

OK, here’s the scenario:  Florida has a disappointing season.  They come in fourth in the SEC East.  In the SEC tournament, they beat the second worst team in the SEC, then lose to Mississippi State.  No conference title, no tournament title.  Mississippi State on the other hand, wins the SEC West, beats Florida in the tournament, and eventually takes #1… (more…)
