Sometimes numbers lie

posted by Moonage

Got a real shock when I saw this headline:

Death Toll From China Quake Rises to 107, 900 Students Buried

To be a little more clear, that’s not 107,900 students buried.  That’s 107 deaths, 900 students buried.

Michelle Kosinski strikes again!

posted by Moonage

I enjoy Newsbusters almost as much as Mythbusters.  They’re a hoot at pointing out factual errors in reporting.  And, they LOVE picking on MSNBC.  Good reason to, MSNBC is a classic at bad reporting.  However, in their haste to show how wrong today’s headline was, I think they missed the obvious chuckle of the day.  To wit, a young girl makes a trip to the North Pole.  Now, we’d all like to go there, so that part’s pretty interesting as it is.  However, the North Pole is a pretty dull place for the most part.  Just a bunch of snow.  So, to liven up their piece a bit and to turn it into a global warming message, MSNBC embellished by adding melting glaciers and starving penguins.  Two problems with that obviously stick out.  First, and most conspicuous is the fact there are no glaciers on the North Pole.  It’s a flat plain.  Secondly, and the part that really got under Newsbusters’ skin, there are no penguins on the North Pole either.  However, the best part of it all to me was what Newsbusters totally missed.  Namely, this:

Now, to me, that is more exciting than the fact there are no penguins on the North Pole.  That name ring any bells?  Maybe this will:

Get it now?  The babe who needed a canoe for ankle deep water also thinks there are glaciers and penguins on the North Pole.

Man, where was she when I was in college?

Frat boys on coke! (Who’d a thunk it?)

posted by Moonage

Sometimes I gotta wonder what it takes to be a major media contributer.  Today’s case in point:

The headline:

Nearly 100 Students Arrested in Massive Drug Raid at San Diego State University

Simple enough.  Enticing, curiosity is piqued.  Good job so far.  Now, to the meat of the story:

The San Diego County district attorney’s office says nearly 100 students have been arrested at San Diego State University on drug-related charges.

Drugs, cash and guns were seized from sellers and buyers in the bust that followed a five-month undercover operation.

Pretty standard fare so far.  I’m still wondering what makes this a national headline. I mean, we had this many arrested in a bust in rural Kentucky.  96 busted at a party school in Southern California struck me as being pretty lame.  Maybe, just possibly, it was this:

Prosecutors say the 96 arrests include fraternity members.

OMG!  No way I say!  Who would ever in a bazillion years have guessed frat boys do drugs too?

Well, now that the investigation is obviously over, I have at my disposal a flick of what apparently tipped off Fox that some of these frat boys might have been stoners:

( What exactly is the point of this story again? )

Miley Cyrus apologizes again and again

posted by Moonage

Miley Cyrus is apologizing to anyone who’ll listen over this photo.  I am clueless.  What’s wrong with it?  Now, I get the Disney/pure as the driven snow image she has to portray for Hannah Montana.  But to me, this pic is pretty much pure as the driven snow.  There’s nothing suggestive, nothing inappropriate, and not really any critical skin exposed.  You’ll see a lot more flesh when she goes swimming in the most conservative bathing suit.  So, I just don’t get it.  Are we just that anxious to shoot down anyone that tries to set a good example for kids?

Bad judgement

posted by Moonage

Yesterday during the Kentucky - Arkansas game, with the 30 seconds left and the game on the line, CBS cut away to the Duke game.  Now, it’s bad enough to cut away from the game everyone here wanted to see.  But, to suddenly be watching Duke?  After I imagine several thousand irate phone calls, they cut back to the UK game with about 10 seconds left and the game basically over.  I doubt too many people here hung around to watch the Duke game  :)

Recalled Beef Likely Already Eaten

posted by Moonage

Man, I love a headline like that.  Gets your attention don’t it?  The details are on Spacedream, since it seemed kinda droll for here.  But, gotta love a headline that basically just blurts our “YOU’RE GONNA DIE!”. ( For what it’s worth, you most likely won’t. )

What does it take to be naughty?

posted by Moonage

According to Fox, not much.  Here’s the headline:

Lindsay Lohan Forgets Key Undergarment, Makes Man Cry

Sounds exciting huh?  Here’s the evidence:

The “key undergarment” was her bra.  Like she really needed one with this outfit anyway.

No one’s really sure why the man cried, he just posed for a picture with her.

This is beyond stupid.  However, it does give me a lot more pleasant reasons to post pictures of Lindsay than I was getting not too long ago.  So, that’s a good thing.  If this is the worst she gets for a few years, I’ll probably be posting a lot more pics of her just because I like to.  Hopefully they’ll be a lot more exciting than this “headline”.

Man, I just love stories like this.   Be sure to follow it to the end, that’s the best part:

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. —  The Detroit News and Free Press are reporting that a burned and beheaded body found by a utility crew is that of a convicted sex offender. A single fingerprint from the victim’s burned hand has allowed Michigan State Police to identify him as 26-year-old Daniel Gene-Vincent Sorensen.

The print reveals that Sorensen had been a registered sex offender in Illinois.

Northville Township sewer and water department crews found the body at the end of a cul-de-sac about 20 miles northwest of Detroit about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Sorensen’s head has not been found.

A cause of death has not been determined.

Now, I’m no forensic pathologist or anything remotely close.  However, I am going to assume his death was caused by the loss of his head.  I just don’t think anyone would cut off a head while it was burning.

A while back I asked people whether certain molesters should be given death sentences.  Not too many people responded.  Of those that have, 91%+ think they should.  Looks like someone else out there agrees.

I don’t know the circumstances surrounding this.  However, I’m quite sure the details will be plastered all over media before too long.  I’ll be watching.

Bad year for pumpkins?

posted by Moonage

OK, here’s the headline:

Rain, Drought, Wipe Out Pumpkin Crops Across U.S.

That’s the headline.  Nevermind the fact that rain and drought usually don’t go together well in the same headline, here’s what either the rain or the drought has done to pumpkins here:

Might big pumpkins

Mighty big pumpkins

Mighty big pumpkins

Pumpkins here apparently are in fine shape.

Even more creations to start the day

posted by Moonage

OK, here’s the headline:

Another creation

Models wear creations part of the Dsquared2 Spring/Summer 2008 collection presented in Milan, Italy, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007. (AP Photo/Alberto Pellaschiar)

Now, not sure about you all, but I’ve seen these outfits before.  Maybe not every stitch was the same, but pert’near close.  So close I can’t tell any difference.  Why do people keep calling this stuff “creations”?  Call it what it is, panties, teddies, sexy stuff.  Whatever you want, just don’t abuse the word “creation”.  When one duplicates something else, the very last thing it is is a creation.

OK, whining’s over.  Enjoy the pic.  The petty stuff is what gives me the personal justification to post pics like this and feel justified in doing so.  I can’t wait to see what creations we’ll have tomorrow amidst the pictures of bloodied monks.
