Honoring draft dodgers

This is so absurd I’m sort of at a loss for words: NELSON, British Columbia — After burning their draft cards during the Vietnam War, tens of thousands of Americans avoided jail by fleeing to Canada. Many settled in the small town of Nelson, British Columbia (search), just across the Washington state border. Now, 30 years later, the mayor of… (more…)

Busting Yusaf Islam

A London-to-Washington flight was diverted to Maine when it was discovered that passenger Yusuf Islam formerly known as singer Cat Stevens was on a government watch list and barred from entering the country. I feel so much safer knowing Cat Stevens isn’t allowed near me.

City Confidential, Pt 2

Pt. 1 Pt. 2 I stated as a comment to part 1 of this series that I feel the War on Drugs is not focused correctly. It needs to be focused more on addiction intervention than simply prosecuting users. Use that time in jail for forced intervention. If it works, it keeps people from coming back for the same reason.… (more…)

Ivan’s here

Ivan’s here. Lots of rain and wind. It’s pretty nasty. I had a roof vent that had gotten damaged during a previous storm, I found out it’s damaged worse than I thought. I have a leak. Now, although it takes a tropical storm to make this problem apparent, I have called the roofers to fix it. I had been threatening… (more…)

Hurricane Ivan

This is bordering on the edge of ridiculous. I live in Kentucky. We are not a state that borders anything remotely similar to a beach. The Appalachian Mountains seperate us from the east coast, and most of the Gulf Coast. Hurricanes present a flood danger here, but they are usually so rare that it’s more of a curiosity when it… (more…)

WW IV?

Back home in Commentary magazine, Norman Podhoretz has written a mighty essay, descriptively titled “World War IV: How It Started, What It Means, and Why We Have to Win.” Podhoretz is careful in his use of language, so that when he writes of World War IV he isn’t just using a racy metaphor. We are at war, nothing less —… (more…)

Social Agendas for Sale?

Many many years ago, Jesse Jackson marched with Martin Lutehr King, Jr. in efforts to eliminate the social injustices that existed in many parts of the country in regards to bigotry and racism. His non-violent efforts gained him a lot of respect throughout the country. However, it appeared as he aged, he protesteth too much, and seemed to protest things… (more…)

Hurricanes, Economy, and Elections

And now I’m going to shamelessly steal a post from mld38 of The Motley Fool as well. I’ll do this whenever someone posts something that makes me think of something I hadn’t thought of before. This is definitely one of those: Hurricane Andrew : 16 – 28 August, 1992 Did August 1992 hurricane hurt the broad USA economy? If so,… (more…)

Afghans Look Forward

FOXNews.com – U.S. & World – Reporter’s Notebook: Afghans Look Forward: “Presidential campaign politics are not limited to the United States this summer. Big surprises, tough choices and security concerns are the backdrop for the upcoming Oct. 9 Afghan presidential election. Sound familiar? ” I’m wishing them all the luck in the world on this election. They need it more… (more…)
