While looking for something and finding something else I totally didn’t need to know, I stumbled on something that I had wrong for about two decades. It all started with a video search for The Talking Heads. Finding one that I didn’t have the specific details for, I had to do a little looking to make sure it was what I thought it was. Time for a musical interlude:
So anyways, that led me to Wiki on The Talking Heads. That led to a story about No Talking, Just Head. That was a project the remaining Heads made after David Byrne left. Point of clarification here. “Talking Head” is a tv personality. “Just head” refers to a blow job. How did Byrne convince a judge the two were “evocative”? Oh well. Byrne put a very quick end to No Talking Just Head. In the meantime, they put together one album that had a few pretty decent songs on it. However, they didn’t use one lead singer. Rather, they had several people do different songs. One of them was a gal named Johnette Napolitano.
A few days later, this morning namely, as I was driving to work, a song came on the radio I’ve heard for years. After checking, I’ve been listening to it since 1990. I always liked the song. It was a guilty pleasure for me because I absolutely hate Grace Slick. OK, what does Grace Slick have to do with this? Well, ever since I heard it, it sounded like Grace Slick to me. Except a good part of the song was sultry as opposed to grating. But, the chorus is belted out in typical Slick fashion. So I listened to the song. However, when the song ended, the radio announcer mentioned who it was. And, it wasn’t Grace Slick. The song was “Joey”. It was by Concrete Blonde. The singer, of course, is Johnette Napolitano.
She’s got a TON of stuff to listen to as well. No idea how I’ve missed her for 20 years. She’s got the best voice since Natalie Merchant.
