July 30, 2008 creation

posted by Moonage

It’s been too long since I “discovered” another “creation”.  Here’s one of the “creations” posted by Yahoo from yesterday:

Now, myself, for all of my life I called this a “bikini”.    According to dictionary.com, a bikini is defined as:

1.  a very brief, close-fitting, two-piece bathing suit for women or girls.

According to the same reference, a “creation” is:

  1. the act of producing or causing to exist; the act of creating; engendering.
  2. the fact of being created.
  3. something that is or has been created.
  4. the Creation, the original bringing into existence of the universe by God.
  5. the world; universe.
  6. creatures collectively.
  7. an original product of the mind, esp. an imaginative artistic work: the creations of a poetic genius.
  8. a specially designed dress, hat, or other article of women’s clothing, usually distinguished by imaginative or unique styling: the newest Paris creations.

Now, I gotta admit, this is something that has been “created”.  So, 1,2, and 3 do apply.  And, none of this would have existed if not by some type of divine intervention I assume, so 4 applies.  And, this is definitely something that is part of the universe, so 5 applies.  Although this babe is a creature, what she is wearing is not, so 6 does not apply.  Now, since this truly is a bikini, which has existed for a while, 7 does not apply.  And, being as pink bikinies with ruffles have existed for a while as well, I don’t think 8 applies either.  So, bottom line to me is I don’t think this truly qualifies for the adjective “creation”.  “Hot babe in a bikini” works just fine for me.

Bottom bottom line, nit-picking the word “creation”, which I have done here for a long time, just gives me another reason to post a “hot babe in a bikini” for no other reason than she was just standing there.

Moonlet and Elvis

posted by Moonage

Moonlet and I went to see an Elvis impersonator for an American Cancer Society fundraiser last night.  This guy was a blast.  Looked kinda like Elvis, sounded a LOT like Elvis, and bantered very well with the audience.  Totally enraptured by the presentation, my boy decided to park right in front of the stage.  “Elvis” asked him his name pretty close to the beginning of the show, and then would occasionally ask him if he liked a particular song for the rest of the evening.  It was a hoot.  Given the advent of the Iphone camera having absolutely no settings whatsoever or a flash, it makes for some unusual effects.  I really liked this one:

Batman: The Dark Knight

posted by Moonage

We went to see The Dark Knight last night.  I’ll tell you what.  I’ve not been a fan of the Batman movie series at all.  I’ve seen most of them, but even with all the big booms and fights, they bore me.  Everything’s grey, everyone talks in monotone, everthing’s serious.  Now, I grew up with the Adam West Batman, so I liked the campy Batman a lot more.  Which I think is a big part of the appeal of Heath Ledger’s Joker.  For folks like me, he’s the teaser that maybe, just maybe, this comic book encarnation of Batman might just go back to what WE loved most.  I doubt that will happen, but using Mike Myers as the next Batman should be an idea.  My commission rate is minimal.

The movies itself is a roller-coaster ride that I will admit took a lot more turns than I expected.  All but one of the turns made sense and kept the movie moving at an almost chaotic pace.  The characters that survive evolve in ways you see coming ( especially Aaron Eckhart’s ), and some you don’t.  In other words, there is nothing predictable about the end of the movie.  It’s an excellent plot sans one jumping of the shark that kind of let me down because the rest of the plot was so well developed.

We took our five year old boy with us given our experience with previous Batman movies.  That really wasn’t a good idea for the most part.  Now, it didn’t really have anyhing that would leave him scarred for life, but it did make me as a parent squirm a little bit.  That’s a distraction I don’t like to have to deal with when I watch a movie.  It’s rated PG-13, I suggest following that advice.  ( At the very least, PG-10 or so. )

Bottom line, I was pleasantly surprised how much I did enjoy The Dark Knight.  It is hugely better than the previous installments.  All thumbs up on this one!

Space Chimps

posted by Moonage

For a 40-something year old techno-geek father of a five year old, this is a must-see.  And, most likely a must-have.  First of all, it has monkeys. I think all men like monkeys.  Second, it has pretty funny geeky guys.  Thirdly, it has rockets.  Fourthly, it has wormholes.  But, for me, Space Chimps takes all that and pushes it over the edge with repeated references to my all-time sci-fi favorite, 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The first wormhole trip when it zooms in on the eyes of Ham is priceless for a Clarke-phobe.  But, it was one little bit by Titan just put it in a league of its own:

Titan:  Are you wearing a tin-foil suit?

Ham: Yes

Titan:  Are you David Bowie?

Ham:  No

Titan:  Then you’re an astronaut.

Other than some college humor and full frontal nudity ( human, of course ), what else could any 40-something year old techno-geek father of a five year old want in a movie?

All thumbs up on this one!

Bonepony

posted by Moonage

This weekend we had our annual Master Musician Festival.  It’s a rather large gala here that stretches over two or three days and features all kinds of performers from all kinds of backgrounds and genres.  In essence, you never really know what to expect from one group to the next.  Especially, if you’ve never heard of the performer before.  Every year, we have one or two acts that just seem to stand out from the rest.  This year, for me, there was one act particularly that just hit me just right.  That band was called Bonepony.  Now, ya gotta understand what I like in a performance to start with.  I like nergy.  Not just fast and loud, but physical energy as well.  Too many bands just stand there.  That bores me visually.  I could sit in my home and listen to that and enjoy it just as much or more.  For a show to be unique, I like something visually that cranks me up along with the music.  Secondly, I like a positive show.  One that cranks you up for all the right reasons.  There’s too much pushing people down in this world.  I look for and enjoy those things that push you up.  And lastly, I like to see the personality of the performer onstage.  I prefer to look at shows in the perspective of who they are moreso than a collective group impression.  When I saw Bon Scott with ACDC, you knew what ACDC was all about.  Brian Johnson carried the tunes ok, but he just seemed to be there.  The focus shifted 100% to Angus, which was more than enough .  But, with the dueling personalities of Bon and Angus, it was a unique experience that I still haven’t forgotten.  Seeing ACDC in 1979 still ranks as my favorite show ever.  When you saw them then, the energy level just exploded at you.  The personalities just exploded at you.  And, needless to say, the music just exploded at you.  I’m not sure I ever experienced anything close to that since.  Maybe Ted Nugent’s Guitar Army was fairly close, but all you got personality wise was Gonzo.  This weekend was close to that.  Now, one last preamble before I dig in too deep, the reason I remember ACDC in 1979 better than I do in later years was because I still remember laughing hysterically at what I was seeing.  They were fun.  Maybe not in all the right reasons, but they were an absolute riot.

This weekend came close to that feeling.  First of all Bonepony’s primary personality shines through via Scott Johnson.  Now, here’s Scott:

The immediate impression I got was a cross between Iggy Pop and Bobcat Goldthwait.  Now, anyone who knows me well knows that is a most excellent comparison.  Iggy had the energy, and Bobcat had, well, let’s jsut say a special presence.  However, Scott’s smile was totally disarming.  One look at him initially and I didn’t really expect too much musically.

Nick Ngyuen sort of had a Jimmy Page look and feel to me.  Now, Jimmy’s never been one of my favoritest guiter players.  But, he had a presence to him that few have been able to match.  Jimmy, like few others, looked someone who was in control of what he was doing.  I like that in a musician under one caveat.  They have to match that look.  And, I have to say, at least live, Nick is possibly the most incredibly talented string man I have ever witnessed in my entire life.  The dude just bounced from one instrument to the next and played them in ways that most people only dream of.  What most people forget is that Jimmy Page’s greatest solos were emulating other stringed instruments with his guitar.  What he should have done is what I’ve seen people doing more of lately and Nick has down to an art form.  They make other instruments sound like guitars.  The advantage for Nick is multi-fold and it showed.  They don’t have a bass player.  Why bother when you can do it all yourself?  Nick was amazing for me to watch.  It’s not terribly often that a performer plays a popular festival in a small rural town that just makes me go “WOW!”.  NIck and Cowboy Crush’s Debbie Johnson being the only two in many years.  The things Nick does with strings just left me slack-jawed.

Here’s Kenny Wright playing the drums.  Like the other two members, he played several instruments.  Now, the thing about Bonypony is they are just a trio.  That’s it.  No studio stand-ins, nothing. Just the three of tiem.  They made more sound than the follow-up act did with four guiters by a mile.  That folks, is talent.  Now, their music is pretty simple.  Their message usually very upbeat.  In other words, it’s hard to take them seriously.  But, if you pay attention to what is being done and especially the live sound, you realize these guys are on a talent level very, very few bands ever achieve.  They were pretty remarkable to me.

And quite frankly, the airwaves need a LOT more Bonepony’s that lift you up and lot less urban ghetto crap that beats our society down.

I will be seeing Bonepony again when I can.  And, my five year old boy will be there with me.

Just a side note, I really pity whoever follows these guys during a show.  Kinda reminds me of the days when ACDC opened for UFO.  Anyone who attended those shows in ‘79 remember seeing UFO?  Regardles of the hits count, these guys need to be the headliners.  Or, at the very least, the show-closers.

Excellent show guys! I can’t recommend a better show for my peeps out there right now.

Hancock

Me and Mrs. Moon decided to leave Moonlet at home and go do some adult thingies tonight.  We went out to eat at somewhere besides Hardees or Burger King.  We drank alocohol during said meal.  And then we went to see a movie not made by Pixar.  Given the limited viewing here, we saw Hancock.  Now, I had made the mistake of reading several reviews of Hancock.  None of them were terribly flattering.  Some downright predicted the end of the Will Smith July 4 magic.  Quite frankly, I think they missed the mark entirely.  Will Smith movies have rarely been about developing backgrounds on the title characters.  The mood and pace of his movies are what usually made them work.  And, the charm of Will Smith always gave his characters a boost.  Nothing different here.  Sure, we don’t get a “you’re so stupid we’re gonna spell it out” character development.  But, I don’t ususally need them.  We get just enough detail to figure it out.  The reviewers who were dismayed at the lack of character development obviously didn’t pay that much attention.  It’s there.  You know who and what he is.  It’s just not overt.  That’s the way I like it.  I like to think.  Or, at least think I am figuring it out.  The scene where they claim the movie basically jumps the shark didn’t surprise me.  I felt it coming.  The only part I didn’t really like was the climax.  They are always too long.  This movie is no exception.  Basically, for me, it was another Will Smith movie.  That’s all I hope for in a Will Smith movie.  When you’re getting it right, don’t mess with it.

Two thumbs up on this one.  Although little kids wouldn’t necessarily be inappropriate, they won’t understand the humor for the most part.  The action isn’t really enough to keep them entertained either.  I’d leave the five year old at home.  Besides, me and Moonlet are going to see Journey to the Center of the Earth this week.

Is Lindsay Lohan gay?

posted by Moonage

There’s a lot of very depressing news going on in the world today.  In the midst of all that, there’s some fluff that is quite useless in every sense of the word.  The biggest of the big when it comes to complete uselessness is the “evidence” that Lindsay Lohan is lesbian. Outside of purely Pavlovian interests, I don’t think it means a thing in the world. But, for the sake of curiosity ( pun intended ), I’ve made a poll!
