Now, to put this kid in perspective, he’s 11.

We went to see the latest Indy movie.  It was, in every aspect, a very typical Indiana Jones in my opinion.  That of course, is excellent.  Great personality development, quick references to other movies that catch your attention, lots of things that go boom, just a little violence to make you squirm if you have kids, and of course, fantastic special effects.  As usual, you sort of have to suspend your personal opinions over whether something is real or not.  But, if you do, you’ll enjoy how well they’ve taken an obscure consipracy theory and ran with it.  I have never been disappointed with an Indiana Jones movie.  I’m still not.

Three out of three thumbs up for this one!

And, due to fairly painful sunburn, might go back to see it again today. :(

Sweet Home Alabama?

My buds over at Independent Sources wonder if this is what a trip looks like:

I can’t imagine a trip being that scary.  I get the impression watching this we lost the Cold War and the Commie Russians have over-run Atlanta.  Not sure which would be worse, an Atlanta dealing with Russkie Commie lookin dudes, or the real Atlanta dealing with Elton John.

I’m back!

posted by Moonage

Ran into a little kink in the system over the last few days.  Hope you all didn’t miss me too terribly bad.  There might be some little kinks here and there, but for the most part things should be a lot safer, and hopefully faster in a couple of days.  One word to the wise, do NOT use godaddy’s servers!

Sometimes numbers lie

Got a real shock when I saw this headline:

Death Toll From China Quake Rises to 107, 900 Students Buried

To be a little more clear, that’s not 107,900 students buried.  That’s 107 deaths, 900 students buried.

Speed Racer

Me and the boy went to see Speed Racer yesterday.  I don’t know what to make of this one.  First impression was I was glad it was over.  The old tv series was that jerky anime stuff that I never liked.  The movie held true to form.  It’s jerky, it’s fast, it has bodies floating around the screen, it has psychedelic backgrounds, super-enhanced colors, and the car action scenes happen so fast you don’t have a clue what actually happened.  It’s just chaos at times.  Then, it has long drawn out scenes of dialogue with real quick jumps from person to person.  At one hour, it would have been OK.  At over two hours, it gets tiresome for an adult.  Given the issues I had with the boy, I think it’s a little too much for five year olds as well.  He thought the movie was cool and wants to see it again.  That’s the bottom line for me when going to a kid’s movie.  However, the next time, if there is one, I’ll suck down about one pot of coffee before I go.  All in all, I’d rather see Iron Man again by a long shot.  There was one more thing I kept feeling during the entire movie as well.  I really couldn’t help but feeling I was seeing a 21st CGI update of Tron.

But, after thinking a little more about it, I guess Tron was simply Disney’s 1980’s version of Speed Racer, the tv show from 1967. So, I guess this genre of CGI anime auto racing has come full circle.  Hopefully it ends with this movie.  The concept is fun and simple.  The anime part I can do without.

Titanic 2: Two the Surface

The internet has given us lots of things.  Some good, some bad, some criminal.  It has also led to a lot of confusion as the restrictions to communication have been totally removed in most parts of the world.  Now, there’s a new generation of people popping on the internet that have taken pranks or artistic liberties to a new level.  For example:

That folks, is NOT an actual trailer for a new movie.  That’s just something Robert Blankenheim felt like throwing together in something called a trailer mashup.  I would have totally ignored this if it weren’t so dang good I fell for it hook, line, and sinker.  I really thought it was an upcoming really horrible movie.  Luckily for us, it’s not.  Instead of being a trailer for a really bad movie, it’s an incredibly good piece of editing.  I have no clue what Mr. Blankenheim ’s vocation is, but he’s awful dang sharp at editing movies!

There is so much wrong with this song!  I’ve loved it for years.  Not sure if Dread is still around or not, but I’m looking! If I were to have another bash on the lake for my birthday, this is who I want for the band!

Michelle Kosinski strikes again!

I enjoy Newsbusters almost as much as Mythbusters.  They’re a hoot at pointing out factual errors in reporting.  And, they LOVE picking on MSNBC.  Good reason to, MSNBC is a classic at bad reporting.  However, in their haste to show how wrong today’s headline was, I think they missed the obvious chuckle of the day.  To wit, a young girl makes a trip to the North Pole.  Now, we’d all like to go there, so that part’s pretty interesting as it is.  However, the North Pole is a pretty dull place for the most part.  Just a bunch of snow.  So, to liven up their piece a bit and to turn it into a global warming message, MSNBC embellished by adding melting glaciers and starving penguins.  Two problems with that obviously stick out.  First, and most conspicuous is the fact there are no glaciers on the North Pole.  It’s a flat plain.  Secondly, and the part that really got under Newsbusters’ skin, there are no penguins on the North Pole either.  However, the best part of it all to me was what Newsbusters totally missed.  Namely, this:

Now, to me, that is more exciting than the fact there are no penguins on the North Pole.  That name ring any bells?  Maybe this will:

Get it now?  The babe who needed a canoe for ankle deep water also thinks there are glaciers and penguins on the North Pole.

Man, where was she when I was in college?

Frat boys on coke! (Who’d a thunk it?)

posted by Moonage

Sometimes I gotta wonder what it takes to be a major media contributer.  Today’s case in point:

The headline:

Nearly 100 Students Arrested in Massive Drug Raid at San Diego State University

Simple enough.  Enticing, curiosity is piqued.  Good job so far.  Now, to the meat of the story:

The San Diego County district attorney’s office says nearly 100 students have been arrested at San Diego State University on drug-related charges.

Drugs, cash and guns were seized from sellers and buyers in the bust that followed a five-month undercover operation.

Pretty standard fare so far.  I’m still wondering what makes this a national headline. I mean, we had this many arrested in a bust in rural Kentucky.  96 busted at a party school in Southern California struck me as being pretty lame.  Maybe, just possibly, it was this:

Prosecutors say the 96 arrests include fraternity members.

OMG!  No way I say!  Who would ever in a bazillion years have guessed frat boys do drugs too?

Well, now that the investigation is obviously over, I have at my disposal a flick of what apparently tipped off Fox that some of these frat boys might have been stoners:

( What exactly is the point of this story again? )
