Looking at things that probably don’t need to be looked at

Solomon Linda

For reasons I can’t really explain, other than always loving the slightly odd things in life, The Lion Sleeps Tonight has always been one of my personal favorites. Being 40something, I was introduced to the song by Robert John, who had a hit with it in 1972. Most everyone still remembers the The Tokens “original” version. What most people don’t know is “the rest of the story”. And, Wimoweh has one heck of a history. I’ll digress to an incredibly well done history of the song here.

Now, this is going to be an interesting list of references:

    Here’s my version:

Now, I feel compelled to stop here is because here is a list of of other recordings of The Lion Sleeps Tonight:

    • Mbube 1939 - Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds(Gallotone). Sold estimated 100,000 78s over a decade…
    • Tuxedo Swingsters, featuring Abdullah Ibrahim, early fifties.

    • Easy Walkers, according to Prof V. Erlmann of UTexas.
    • Wimoweh 1951 - The Weavers. Allegedly authored by the fictitious “Paul Campbell,” but really adapted by Pete Seeger, who copied Mbube “note-for-note.” Published Folkways, released Decca. And you know what, that list is probably incomplete.  Mine’s not even on
    there.

If you’ve made it this far, then I’ll let you in on a Moonage dumb moment. I was in college, partying wth some friends in a popular bar. Back in those days, you got three songs for 25 cents. I put, I think it was, five dollars in the juke box and played Robert John’s version only. Yup, that would be The Lion Sleeps Tonight 20 consecutive times. The friends I had left really enjoyed the absurdity of the moment. Everyone else left.

  1. david Said,

Good grief — how on earth can there be so many recordings of that song?! That’s crazy, man…

  2. Moonage Said,

That’s nothing compared to some. Probably the most recorded song I can think of is Hoagy Charmichael’s “Stardust”. There is an estimated 1,400 recordings of the song.

Just since 1995, Peer LTD, which owns the majority of the publishing rights to the song, has dispersed 533 licenses for new and reissued recordings, including one arriving this week by jazz pianist Bill Charlap, part of an all-Carmichael CD titled — what else? — “Stardust.”

That doesn’t even count the influences of “Stardust”. The song was inspiration for a character named “Stardust Cowboy”. That lead to this:

Actually, the fact that the Ledge was initially signed up by Mercury has changed the history of pop music quite a bit. When a certain David Bowie signed a contract with the same company in 1970, he received a pile of singles as a sort of welcome present. These included Paralyzed. Bowie got fascinated by the record and decided to use part of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy name for his own character Ziggy Stardust.

  3. Bing Said,

Check the facts: Yma Sumac was actually born and raised in Peru. She later became a US citizen.

  4. Moonage Said,

I just reprinted the list.  Let the guy who made it know:

  6. Moonage Said,

Hank Medress, the lead singer of The Tokens, who recorded the version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight I probably like best, died yesterday. He was 68.

  7. Moonage Said,

In memory of Hank, here’s a reunion of The Tokens doing Their greatest hit:
