Closer
Ever see one of those movies that didn’t make any sense? I mean, from the moment it starts until the last credit rolls? That was the feeling I got watching “Closer“. People just seem to meander around, saying they’re having sex with others, accusing each of having sex with others, and talking about having sex with others. However, where it really falls apart is when one character leaves Natalie Portman for Julia Roberts.
I mean, imagine leaving this:
For this:

Sorry, but that was too much of a leap of faith for me to buy. The movie died at the moment the guys were fighting over Julia and dismissing Natalie. I just couldn’t handle it. If the roles had been reversed, maybe.
So, guess what? Yup, you probably already know:
Natalie Portman wins a Golden Globe for this awful movie. I am quite sure it’s because she showed the most flesh of any of the candidates. ( Meryl Streep was definitely at a disadvantage in this category apparently. Although, she did get the best “acceptance speech” for the night. )
I usually don’t watch awards shows about movies and tv. This is why.

Didn’t see the movie, didn’t watch the Globes (orbs???). But I guess there’s no accounting for individual taste. I’d go with Julia anytime over Natalie. Like I said, that’s “what the world go round” (individual taste, I mean).
I am not at liberty at this point in my life to explain in detail why I would prefer a drop-dead cute stripper to a middle-aged photographer. But, your point is well taken. However, in regards to the Globes, Natalie Portman’s performance was not worthy of the “best actress” award. She may be an excellent actress, but what she had to work with in this movie was not award material.
Cate Blanchett (Aviator) was originally signed to play the role of Anna, but due to her pregnancy she had to drop out of the film.
Interesting sidebar. But I would still have a hard time understanding leaving a stripper looking like Portman for a photographer looking like either Roberts or Blanchett. Although I will say, Blanchett would have made it a little more plausible.
I also found this write-up about the movie:
“CLOSER is about glossy infidelity. The message is clear: beautiful people are entitled to do whatever they want. There are no consequences.”
Nothing was clear to me.
I “call” your Natalie Portman (drop Julia Roberts) and “raise” you Heather Locklear (who after all these years, still looks real good).
As I said, that’s “what makes the world go round” (individual taste, I mean).
I call your Heather Locklear and raies you with Selma Hayek, who is just scary good lookin.
And yeah, it does make the world go round. Lucky for “them”!
Added a poll just for chucks and giggles. I just always enjoyed this post.
